Florentine Fare: Squash Blossom Pizza + Grape Focaccia

Our time in Florence was packed with delicious food breaks and this was one of the best: squash blossom pizza with a side of grape focaccia.

We stopped Verrazzano’s Cantinetta in Florence on our last day there. It’s immediately across the street from Perché No! which we had been frequenting nightly. It was a highlight of our trip and I only wish we had discovered it earlier - I cannot recommend it enough.

When the woman behind the counter gave us our pizza, she made it clear the grape bread was a must-try. Not convinced by the name or look, I almost decided against it. But she was pervasive. And correct. It was incredible.

She explained it is made only a few weeks a year, when all the vineyards are harvesting their grapes. It’s from the extra bounty everyone has in the fall that this bread is made, and it was one of the best things we ever tasted.
