Cuisine: Flores' Flowers
This evening we braved the chilly S.F. air and briskly walked up to Union Street to visit the much-anticipated Flores restaurant. Nestled between two Cow Hollow staples, Wildseed and Palm House, Flores has big shoes to fill in the 2000 Block of Union having taken over Betelenut's previous locale.
If ambiance were all that was required, Flores would be keeping up just fine. Between the modern Spanish tiled floors and the backlit bar, Flores has ambience checked off quite nicely. However, one doesn't walk in the brisk winter air just to see something pretty. Luckily, Flores has food + drink checked off even more nicely.
We started off with cocktails at the festive bar...
We then were seated in a cozy corner of the restaurant. We started off with chips and guacamole, but don't be fooled by the commonality of this Mexican appetizer. This dish was THE dish of the night. Never have I had better guac and chips. Sprinkled with Cojita cheese, the guacamole was the right ratio of tangy to creamy. Sinking warm, salted tortilla chips into it as we sipped our second round of cocktails was the highlight of the evening.
We then ordered the Kale and Bean Quesadilla as an appetizer followed by the Carne Asada Tacos. Both were great, and kale doesn't get better than in a quesadilla, but I'd probably try something new next time. That said, the steak was cooked to perfection: expertly charred on the outside while melt-in-your-mouth tender inside.
We left thoroughly impressed and full, wanting to go back next week for another round of drinks, guac, and warm crunchy chips. Highly recommend starting your Friday evening with apps and drinks here.
